15mm GZG SF and Aslan
Posted in: 15mm SF, SF Painting by Phil on January 07, 2010
I so need to paint some 6mm figures!! That said painting these 15mm SF figures has been great fun! I mentioned yesterday that I would take some “family shots” of the 15mm GZG NSL army I have been painting so… here they are :-
I really like the way these figures have turned out, and am now in two minds about selling the army on (which was the original plan!). I haven’t quite decided on a price yet so if you are interested and would like to make an offer then please drop me an email to phil@firezonestudios.com
Onto some commission painting for today now and sadly I have been a bit limited as to what I could do today. I mentioned yesterday that I had fallen a few times whilst out with Jasper yesterday due to the ice. After getting up this morning I could barely move my right arm and the first 2 fingers on my left hand were in the same state. So painting today has been a bit painful! I have cracked on though, but having to take breaks every 10 minutes or so to let the throbbing subside! Great fun! (not!)
Despite all that I have been working on some 15mm Aslan figures for a commission today and am rather happy with the way they are looking.
Back to some 6mm stuff tomorrow…. and maybe even some 15mm WW2!
GZG 15mm NSL Infantry

As part of the tracked battlegroup from GZG the deal includes infantry figures. The figures are very well sculpted and cast and as such are a delight to paint. I decided on a quick and simple colour scheme for the infantry that would look good on the tabletop.
To help identify different squads each squad has colour coded shoulder pads and unit markings on the other pad. Each unit leader is picked out with 3 flashes on his chest armour.
As I look at the photos I’ve just realised that I have missed painting the base edges, so will do that in morning along with some photos of the complete battleforce.

Back to painting today, not quite as much as I’d planned, but hey ho! I cracked on today with finishing off weathering the 15mm SF armour I had started before Christmas and then onto some GZG Power Armoured Infantry.
The mud on the vehicles has been toned down somewhat to make it look like it has dried, rather than it looking like it was poo!
Tomorrow more 15mm SF and some 6mm Modern and Napoleonics too!
15mm GZG SF The next stage

After tackling some 15mm SF armour yesterday I had decided that the main job for today would be to finish it off. After a slightly frantic morning (and getting stuck in Morrisons supermarket for nearly 2 hours!) I finally got cracking.
One of the things with painting 15mm armour is the absolute delight you get as the models progress. Adding on the weathering and mud really helped to blend the camo colours together and make the vehicles look more natural.

The plan was to finish painting today for Christmas, but I had also hoped to get the infantry finished today! So tomorrow… its infantry! There has also been a slight change of plan. I had intended to return to painting on the 28th December, but I am away over Christmas until after the New Year with Jo, so painting will resume on 4th January. I will be able to access emails during that time so if you want me just hollar
15mm GZG SF Work in Progress

I always find this time of year quite amusing, 2 snowflakes and the entire UK grinds to a halt! That said the snow that we are getting at the moment is rather nice. I don’t even remember snow like this as a kid, and certainly not in Morecambe. Sitting in my office painting and watching the snow come down outside is rather nice.
So what have we been upto today? Well I thought that i’d have a crack at painting up some 15mm SF armour today. The models are from Ground Zero Games and are very easy to assemble, well they are if you don’t run out of superglue! A quick dash to the shop to get some and all sorted!
I had a colour scheme in mind that I have been meaning to use for a while now as I fancied painting up some SF models for use on a desert board (I now need to make some desert terrain!). So I decided that these models from Ground Zero were the perfect opportunity to try out the colours.

The vehicles now all have their base colours on. I still need to finish off quite a few details – tracks, highlights, weathering and crew but I hope to get those done tomorrow. Then it will be onto the infantry.
I am planning to carry on painting tomorrow and then i’m going to break for Christmas, resuming again on the 28th December (at least thats the plan!)
SF and WW2 update
Posted in: SF Painting, World War 2 Painting by Phil on November 04, 2009
After a busy Monday painting SF miniatures yesterday and the first part of today have been spent working on yet more SF miniatures and some Adler WW2 figures too.
First off though we have some Adler WW2. These are German Africa Korps, there would be more photos but the camera battery has died (one day i’ll get the hang of making sure that I have full charge!)

The Adler figures really are nice miniatures to paint.
Next some scenic stuff from Dark Realm miniatures. I did paint these a while back for a client but the photos never made it to the blog! So here they are!

Despite my initial reservations about the DRM scenics (i’m just not a big fan of metal scenery, one of those odd things about me) I actually really enjoyed painting these up. Infact I rather fancy some for my own collection!
All aboard the Ninkynonk..

.. I think I’ve been watching far too much “In the Night Garden”. It was a bit of a disjointed week last week for me and with the clocks going back for winter it all kind of threw me out slightly. Running out of light at a proper time to take photos is a major pain. Still I think I’ve figured that out… its called getting up earlier! I think I have also figured out what has been up with me recently too. The last time I was due for new medication the chemist only had a different brand of tablet in stock, so I had those. It only dawned on me today that the change of brand might be causing me some issues. I have had similar problems with my heart tablets, different brands cause different side effects. From what the doctor has told me it shouldn’t happen, but it does. So with that in mind hopefully I should be able to move forward (again!)
The kids have now returned to school after their break so it was back to painting today with a vengeance. It certainly felt good to get back to my routine. Today we have been finishing off a couple of projects and preparing to start some new ones. The first batch of figures for today are all science fiction based, some of these figures I have shown before as works in progress but now the armies are complete. OK so the first batch are from Ground Zero Games and are from their 6mm Dirtside/Future Wars range.

These figures are an absolute joy to paint with plenty of good detail. The army hasn’t been used in anger yet… but its only a matter of time.
Over the past month or so I have been slowly working on a couple of armies from the Exodus Wars range. Both of the armies feature the Guild from Exodus Wars and now one of the armies is almost complete (as Tom releases new models they will be added to the army).

Guild Prefects and IFV's
Last of the science fiction for today next with a revisit to the wares of Ground Zero Games. These are some of their Human vehicles with UNSC infantry.

As you can see, today was a rather manic SF day! Back to WW2 tomorrow I think!
Hope you enjoyed this selection.
GZG 6mm Kra’Vak
Posted in: SF Painting by Phil on October 20, 2009
For a little while now I have been toying with the idea of adding some GZG 6mm armies to my collection. With getting hold of a Kra’Vak army I have finally crumbled. I asked around a bit to see if anyone had images of the vehicles from the range and in the end I just decided to order.
The figures arrived earlier today and I am very happy with the them. The vehicles are all cleanly cast with excellent detailing. Service from GZG, as always, was superb.

The vehicles were painted using some very simple techniques which give an overall effect. Basically – undercoat black, airbrush blue, drybrush… done. OK a bit more than that but you get the idea!
I have also got painted today some Baccus Russian Napoleonic figures, but the pictures haven’t come out all that well. I’ll give the photos another go tomorrow.
A tale of 2 scales

Winter is quickly drawing in up here in the grim north. Well to me it feels like it is. It is at this time of the year when I think that I should have been born a squirrel and therefore should be allowed to hibernate! Today I have been cracking on with finishing off a few projects and also have been preparing miniatures for painting over the course of the coming week.
It has also been rather a momentous weekend, not for me, but for a certain chap called Jenson Button. If you follow the world of motorsport then you will probably know that yesterday Jenson and the Brawn GP team for which he drives were crowned Formula One world champions. Now I know its not everyones cup of tea and there are a lot of people who feel the same about motorsport as I do about football (22 blokes kicking around an inflated pigs bladder) so I’ll stop now!
Onto the photos for today. The first batch are from a project based around a Guild army using 6mm Exodus Wars miniatures. The figures are based for use with the Future War Commander rules. I showed some of these figures last week as a work in progress.

I would love to say that the army is now finished and ready for gaming with, but as we all know an army is never really complete. I have coming from Exodus Wars at the moment some of the Legionary infantry and some Hoplon APC’s for them to ride in. Is that all? Well, no. Tom has also just released some new vehicles to complement the Guild troops he already has available.

I have some of these on order too, and will have them painted and ready for gaming as soon as they arrive.
I have mentioned elsewhere on this blog that I have recently been tempted back to 15mm SF gaming with miniatures from Critical Mass Games. Their last release was a batch of rifle infantry and combat walkers. Finally I have got round to finishing off the rifle infantry I have! (I have also realised that I’ve forgotten to photograph the combat walkers… DOH!)

You know when you think you have finished something… and then you look again.. well I’ve just realised that I need to paint the base edges on these figures… Ah well, a job for tomorrow!
More WW2 Germans and some SF

It seems ages since I last posted, which seems odd since I normally post everyday. I haven’t been all that well recently (yanno for a change) and at the moment I seem to be able to drop asleep at the drop of a hat. Hopefully now I am starting to feel more like myself again and I’m getting back into the swing of things. Today I’ve been cracking on with painting some commission work in the form of some more GHQ WW2 Germans.

I also have a Future War Commander battlegroup underway using models from the Exodus Wars range.

The ariels are actually bristles from a brush! Also there a couple of small conversions using parts I had left over from some Baccus Command Horizon models.
This battlegroup will certainly grow in size, at the moment (with a couple of extra bits added) it stands at around 4000 points. Tom at Exodus Wars is about to release some more armoured vehicles for the Guild. So they will be added into the mix too!
